Rain last night quickly turned into a more serious situation as an ice storm ensued all over the metro area. According to KCP&L, over 60 outages were reported in Belton, Blue Springs, Grandview, Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Olathe and Overland Park.

Several school districts closed this morning as the conditions caused icy roads. UMKC announced all classes and activities for the day would close at 10:30 a.m.

Flights including American, Southwest Airlines and United were cancelled. More information can be found at

Multiple accidents were reported to the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Missouri Highway Patrol responded to at least six accidents. No injuries were reported.

National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Bowman told The Kansas City Star there could be slick spots even with MoDOT and KDOT treating the roads. "Just slow down, that’s really the biggest thing,” he said. “Slow down and leave some extra time to get to work.”
